Fresh Flower Care: 5 Golden Tips from Florimo
Fresh Flower Care: How to Enjoy Your Bouquet Twice as Long!
Nothing brightens up a home quite like a bouquet of fresh flowers. Whether you’ve treated yourself or received a thoughtful flower gift, you naturally want to enjoy the colors and fragrance for as long as possible.
At Florimo, our flowers come straight from the grower, meaning they arrive at your door incredibly fresh. But did you know you can drastically extend the life of your flowers with the right care? Here are our 5 golden rules.
1. A Clean Base is Everything
Bacteria are the biggest enemy of your flowers. Always use a clean glass vase.
-
Pro Tip: Clean the vase beforehand with a drop of bleach or dish soap. If the vase is clean enough to drink from, it’s perfect for your flowers!
2. Snip, Don't Snap
Before the flowers go into the water, the stems need to be trimmed. The "vessels" in the stem can dry out or become blocked.
-
How? Use a sharp, clean knife or floral shears. Cut about 2 to 5 cm at an angle. Avoid using regular kitchen scissors, as these can crush the stems and prevent water intake.
3. No Foliage in the Water
Leaves submerged in water will start to rot. This leads to bacterial growth, causing flowers to wilt much faster. Remove all lower leaves so that only the clean stems touch the water.
4. The Right Location
Where you place your flowers in your interior is crucial for their longevity:
-
No Fruit: Never place your flowers next to a fruit bowl. Ripening fruit (especially apples and bananas) releases ethylene gas, which causes flowers to age much faster.
-
No Drafts or Heat: Avoid direct sunlight, drafts, or placing them right next to a heater or radiator.
5. Fresh Water and Food
Flowers drink a lot, especially in the first few days. Check the water level daily.
-
Tip: Change the water completely every two to three days and add fresh flower food if necessary. This keeps the water clear and the flowers strong.
